Title: The Writing Process: Revising

Author: M. Hill

Subject: ELA
Grade: 6

Week: 4

Unit/Lesson Plan #: Identity

Unit theme: Identity

Textbook references:

Learning objectives:

- To conceptualize the steps of the Writing Process

- To understand the process of revising work

- To practice revision of work

Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes:

Stage 1:

a. WARM-UP: Students will be given a paragraph to "correct" (one which focuses on punctuation errors).

b. This warm-up will serve as an introduction to our first MUG Shot (adapted from The Write Source 2000), a 5-10 min lesson focusing on Mechanics, Usage, or Grammar for writing. The MUG shot will serve as a minilesson intro to the Write Source Skillsbook, which students will begin to work out of for homework (this week's homework focusing on punctuation usage)

Stage 2:

a. I will give students booklets on the Writing Process - a blank outline featuring each step in the process so that students may fill in their own thoughts about how the writing process works. We will discuss the steps that students have already experienced (Prewriting, Writing) and will make predictions about the other steps (Revising, Editing, Publishing)

Stage 3:

a. Class will specifically focus on revising, and students will be issued Write Source 2000 Handbooks in order to guide their exploration of the Writing Process. We will look at what revision is, and how it is done.

b. I will model revision on my own paragraph by putting notes in the margins to remind me of things I should look at. I will follow the Write Source 2000 guide for revision and checklist.

c. Students will be asked to reread their piece they've selected for publication, and will be asked to put notes in the margin for revision.
