Learning objectives:

- Students will practice techniques already mastered in a more free-form assignment

- Students will explore an aspect of their identity of their own choosing through descriptive paragraph

- Students will be introduced to the idea of a MUG shot.

Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes:

Stage 1:

WARM-UP: Write a simile and a metaphor about the person you decribed in your piece about your family.

Hand back identity maps

Stage 2:

- Since we have been focusing on specific pieces of identity, it is now time that you can choose one piece of your identity, something new (!) and write about that.  We will review the first two parts of writing a descriptive essay, both of which are types of PREWRITING: 1. Choosing a subject and (2) Gathering details.  We are going to return to our identity maps and add another 5 elements of our identities (Add).  Now, choose one piece of your identity that you will write about.  It may be something like a brother, sister, or another family member, something you like to do, something that's important to you (maybe you live in two houses, maybe you have a particular hobby that is part of your identity, whatever!) This time, to write about it, we are going to do a freewrite - leave pen on paper for 5 minutes straight - can't stop writing, just keep on going!

Stage 3:

- Now let's look at these brainstorms.  How are these important parts of your identity?  Turn and talk to your neighbor.  Explain your topic, why it is important to you, and how you feel about it.  Now, write topic sentence about your subject.
