Lesson: Birthday Calendar

Objective: Develop capacity and tools to support and connect with each group member.  

Activities:

1) Instruct students to line up by birthday without speaking or writing.

2) Debreif the exercise. What happened? What worked? What didn't?

3) Create a calendar of advisory birthdays. Have a group discussion identifying what the group would like to do for birthdays.

4) On the same list, gather email and cell phone #s and probe the group's desire to be able to "stay in touch" with one another. Explain that the list will be shared with the whole advisory, and encourage students to add their information only if they are comfortable with other people having their info.

5) Why are birthday celebrations important?  Why is it important for communities to develop celebrations and ways of connecting to each other? 

5) Create an email listserve for the advisory.
