Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science & Engineering: a public school, community and university partnership
Basics
Name: Columbia Secondary Charter School for Math, Science, and Engineering (CSCS)
Applicants:Â Jose Maldonado-Rivera, Jennifer Stillman, Christina Hykes
Overview: CSCS will be a new, public, sixth through twelfth grade school that will open in the fall of 2007. A joint effort between Columbia University and the New York City Department of Education, it will serve academically talented students from upper Manhattan who have an interest in a rigorous and demanding program focusing on math, science, and engineering. Beginning with a founding sixth grade class, the school will add one grade per year until it reaches its full enrollment of 650 students. The school will follow the academic calendar year of Columbia.  This is necessary because we will be using Columbia’s facilities to enhance the science classroom. The school will run a "mini-semester" during the end of the school year, after Columbia University has finished its semester, where students will have the opportunity for intensive study of a topic of interest and travel abroad programs.
