School siting
T
Site
The school will be located temporarily in PS-36, currently a PK-2nd grade school walking distance to Columbia University. This school site is ideal because: 1) it has a capacity to hold 350 additional students, thus allowing us to grow for 3 years; 2) it is near Teachers College and Columbia University - which is essential so that we can take advantage of the university facilities (e.g. labs, computers, library, auditorium, gym, etc) ; 3) it is adjacent to Morningside Park - which has plenty of field science, athletic and recreational opportunities; and 4) it is a short walk to subway access necessary for our fieldtrip programs.
The school’s permanent site will be located on a lot of land donated to DOE by Columbia University. This new facility will be paid for and built to our programmatic specifications by Columbia University, with the school’s administrative staff and faculty involved in the planning process. The planned location is 125th and Broadway (where there is currently a McDonalds). It will be a "green building", with several specialized science and engineering labs, internet wifi available school wide, a rooftop greenhouse, classrooms with variable configurations, state of the art multimedia instructional equipment in all classrooms, among others.
