CSS Partners
Our main partners are Columbia University, the Science, Math and Engineering Departments, and Teachers College. The partnership provides us with membership into the university's academic community including use of educational and recreational facilities, enrollment in courses (by both students and faculty), participation in the university's academic, recreational and cultural events. The University provides in-kind support, technical resources and supports specific projects and activities. Most members of our Planning Team and oversight Board (CUAC) is composed of Columbia University faculty and graduate students.
In addition we will be seeking specific programmatic support from the following organizations:
1) World Vision- study abroad
World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty.
Reasons for Partnering
World Vision has many centers throughout the world that are focused on helping stop worldwide hunger. We would utilize World Vision contacts throughout the world to take trips to various countries. Trips would be rewards, but would also create students who are world conscious. These trips would be added on at the end of the year as mini-sessions.
2) Beacon Program - afterschool program
The Beacon Program represents an extension of the City's commitment to deliver efficient and improved quality educational opportunities to our youth. These programs, as administered by DYCD, continue to set the standard for other municipalities to follow.
Currently, there are 80 Beacons located in public school buildings throughout New York City. Beacon Community Centers operate a minimum of six (6) days and 42 hours a week in the afternoons and evenings, on weekends, during school holidays and vacation periods, and during the summer.
Adherence to youth development principles and a high level of quality community involvement are hallmarks of the Beacon program model. Beacons provide engaging, appropriately structured activities in the hours following the school day. These activities establish opportunities for empowerment and skill building; development of sound character and positive social norms; and, integration of family, school and community supports - all in an environment supervised by caring adult role models.
Reasons for Partnering:
Beacons are great resources for any school that wants to develop a quality afterschool program. As well as being utilized to train leaders for the afterschool program, it is a program that would help CSS to develop a bridge program to the shared space school that the charter school will be housed in.
3) Individual donors/alumnae associated with Columbia University - Saturday academy and study abroad/field expeditions program
Reasons for Partnering:
Columbia is a world leader in science, math and engineering. They would help to develop curriculum, internships as well as utilizing Columbia students as mentors and tutors. Columbia facilities would be used to enrich the math/science/engineering program. This is necessary for the quality math/science/engineering program that CSS is trying to create.
