Activity Set #3: How can weight have no effect?
Submitted by jsaylor on Mon, 01/01/2007 - 7:37pm.
Setup - Two matched, different mass pendulum balls, carefully leveled so has to have the same length string, and set swinging from different angles.
Essential Question: How is it possible that increasing the weight of the bob has no effect on the motion of the pendulum?
Think/Pair/Share
*What do you remember from previous science classes or elsewhere about the difference between Mass and Weight? What is Inertia and is it related to Weight or Mass?
Glossary entrees/ Words to discuss meaning:
inertia
resistance to changes in motion
changes in motion
speeding up, slowing down, changing direction
the local gravitational field
gravitational field in space
gravitational field on moon
"weightlessness"
g-forces
acceleration
roller coaster dips
roller coaster bumps
orbitSmall group whiteboarding task w/ student led discussion circle and teacher demonstration of inertial balance.
