Learning objectives: Classify objects as living and nonliving, or dead Compare the characteristics of living and nonliving things
Distinguish between plants and animals.

Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes:
Define the word biology? Biology is the study of living things. In this unit you will learn about some of the characteristics that all living things have in common. |
Stage 1: have students read the text on this page, explain that salmon hatchlings swim downstream until they have reach the ocean, where they grow into adulthood. When they mature, the adults return to their "home streams". Scientsist aren't sure how they travel to the right river but research has indicated that the salmon can detect a chemical code in the water. This migratory behaviour is instinctive.
In contrast the bears skill in catching salmon is learned, as is knowing when the fish will be migrating. Bear cubs learn from thier mothers, who in turn learned from thiers.

Stage 2: Enviromental Focus: Ask: Why is it important to save animals or plants that are in danger of extinction? All organims depend on other orgamisms for thier survival-often in very sublte ways. As a result when one organism becomes extinct, the whole enviroment can be affected. |
Stage 3: ScienceLog: answer the questions on page 62 and share the answers in class or in groups. |

Homework: No homework in this class? Read pages S24-S25 |
