Learning objectives: Classify objectives as living and non-living or dead. Compare the chacterisitcs of living and non-living things.
Distinguish between plants and animals.
Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes: Locotmotion: The ability of an animal to move on its own from place to place.
Stage 1: getting Started: Use a Mimosa pudica have students can observe how the leaves close when touched. OR plant the bean seeds with the groups and we'll watch how they grow and change to thier light source. |
Stage 2: Observing Locomotion: one of the first things you may notice about an animal is that it is able to move about on it's own. Most animals have skeltons and muscles that work together to provide freedom of movement. Use hamsters to begin the exploration or if you can buy ants. |
Stage 3: How is plant movment different from animal movement? Plant movment is usully much slower than animal movment. Also only one part of a plant usually moves and the entire plant does not move from one place to another under it's own power.
Animal locomotion inlvolves the coordinated movement of many or all parts of the body, and the entire animal moves from one place to another. |
