Appreciation Circle

Purpose: To re-center the group around the act of appreciating others. This can help break a cycle of negativity and criticism between group members.

How it’s done:

  1. The group sits in a circle without any obstacles between them. All group members should be able to see all other group members.
  2. In turns, each group member chooses to speak about another person about whom no-one has spoken yet. Comments should be wholly appreciative. Avoid veiled criticisms.
  3. The next speaker is the person who was just appreciated.
  4. The first person to speak should be appreciated last.

appreciate circle

Thanks for the idea. This is similar to other things we've done, but another twist. We'll use it in our advisory classes this August. Another way we've done appreciation circles is to have everyone put their name (big) on top of a piece of construction paper. Then, we pass the papers around the circle. Everyone writes one thing nice about that person that they have observed. At the end, each person gets their papers back and can keep them. It's fun seeing what other people observe in us, and honors everyone.
