How are living things classified and why?

Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes:

 

 

Stage 1: Students discussed examples of grouping things together. Such as, library, books, department stores, address'. Students will investigate and practice categorizing different fruits and veggies into has many groups as possible.

 

Stage 2:

  Discuss ther terms: classification system, kingdom, and species. Brief introduction on the history of classification and then go over the process they used to group the fruits and veggies.

Stage 3:

  tell students that ths story of how rare it is to find a new species of mammal. Continue with more terms: phylum, class, order, family, genus. Then have students create thier own expedition where they find a new species of mammal. Pass out map of the world, and let them draw, write, and explain where this animal was found, what it looks, like ect. Conclude with sharing the newest discovery of mammal found in New Gueaiune.
