Unit/Lesson Plan #: Unit 2, chapter 5 lesson 1

Unit theme:

Investigates a variety of patterns of growth, in both humans and other organisms.

Textbook references:

text book

Learning objectives:

Growth is a fundamental charateristic of all living things.

Not all people grow at the same rate or reach the same size.

The proportion of different body parts to the total size of a person changes as the person devlops from an embroy to an adult.

Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes:

Sciencelog questions:

How tall will you be as an adult? Why do you think so?

Do living thigns continue to grow as long as they are alive? Are there different kinds of growth? Name some.

What are some things that plants need for healthy growth?

Stage 1: chart

The students responses to the science log questions will reveal the information and preconceptions they have: Discuss thier reponses in class.

Tell students to imagine they they are still the same height as when they were born. ASK: How would life be different? Then have them imagine that people never stopped growing. ASK: How tall do you think you would be if you lived to be 100 years old?

Stage 2:

Measuring Human growth: Have students work in pairs to determine their measurments and to fill in a data chart.

Have each student predict how tall he or she will be as an adult.

Demonstrate hwo to make accurate body measurements.

Stage 3:

Devlope the class profile: It is important for students to realize that a range of measurment is quite normal in any group of living things.

Homework: No homework in this class?Have students gather the following information from three indivuduals.

height, head size, and leg length. One should be a child btw 4-8 years old, another should be a classmate or sibling and the other should be an adult. Prepare a chart similar to the human growth stages diagram on page 78.
