Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes:

 

 

Stage 1:

To assess students' knowledge of parts of a short story, students will be read the picture book, A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.  This will be done as a regular classroom 'read out loud.'

Stage 2:

Students will be shown a list of 12 terms related to their studies of short stories (Internal Conflict, External Conflict, Characterization, Character Traits, Character Motives, Implied Theme, Stated Theme,  Exposition, Climax, Resolution, Historical Setting, Contemporary Setting) and will be asked to define 6 of the traits (of their choice) as they relate to A Bad Case of Stripes.  Students will be expected to use an example of the given trait as it appears in the story as a method of defining the term.

 

 

 

Homework:  Read "The Old Woman who Lived with the Wolves" on  p.217-221 of the Prentice Hall Literature book. 

 

Answer questions 4, 5, and 6 on page 222 on a separate sheet of looseleaf paper, in complete sentences (Questions Related to Conflict, Theme, Story Structure)
