Week: 2

Unit/Lesson Plan #: 3.4

Textbook references:

"The Old Woman who Lived with the Wolves," p. 217-222 of Prentice Hall Literature.

Learning objectives:

- Discuss conflict and types of conflict (internal v. external), practice writing about conflict

Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes:

Stage 1:

As a warm-up activity to the days discussion, students will practice defining a set of word study words (in their own words) that have appeared in the past week's readings: survive, locate, rely, isolate, obtain. We will then work together to define these words, and discuss part of speech of these words (verbs, and how they are defined).

Stage 2:

As a launch into conflict, students will be asked to list at least 5 challenges of living in the wilderness, using these 5 words as inspiration. (In a later warm-up activity, students will be asked to respond to the following: If you had to survive in the wilderness and could have only one object with you (no internet/phone connections), what would you bring, and why?).

Stage 3:

Students' conflicts will be used as discussion pieces for understanding conflict and for differentiating between internal and external conflict. "The Old Woman who Lived with the Wolves" and students' responses to it will be used as points of discussion for discussing conflict and its relationship to plot and cause and effect.
