Key Questions, Concepts, or Themes: How is tone different from mood? What parts of a story help to create tone? Mood? How can you distinguish the tone and mood of a story?

Stage 1: 1. Warm-up: Students will be asked to define mood and tone. 2. Discuss what mood and tone mean in everyday useage. 3. In literature, mood and tone are similar, but have specific uses in relation to writing. 4. Discuss differences between mood and tone, watch short film on mood and tone (http://www.brainpop.com/english/writing/moodandtone/preview.weml) with focus on mood (point out specific relationship between mood and setting)

Stage 2: As book groups, students will have a chance to apply their knowledge of mood and tone as they analyze the discussion questions (attached). The goal of this exercise is to allow students to (1) be introduced to a topic in a teacher-led environment, then (2) appy what they learned on their own and work together to solidify their understanding of the topic.
Once students have completed discussion questions, they can continue their discussion, focusing on other topics of interest (reading notes!) |

Stage 3: As a class, we will reconvene to debrief on mood and tone and what they mean within the story.
