STAR interview stars
Pre-activity discussion question: Why is it important to know the people you are working with? How does it make you feel to work with people you know, rather than people you don’t know?
PART I: Star Interviews
You will be given a chance to interview your fellow STARs and ask them questions about themselves. For this activity, you will be playing two roles: both as interviewer and interviewee. For each round, you will be paired with a partner - you will know who this partner is by the assigned names written on the piece of cardboard you are given. On the back of the piece is a question. It is your job to interview the person whose name appears on the piece and find out the answer to the question. Then, represent their answer so that other STARs can learn about them too! You may write, draw pictures, etc. Be sure to include as much information about their answer as you can, and include their name!
Questions are:
- Describe your family/background. Where is your family from? Who is in your family? What is important to your family?
- What motivated you to want to be a STAR? What do you hope to get out of the STAR Program?
- List and discuss three to five things you are proud of (these can be specific accomplishments, personal qualities, things you like about yourself, or anything else you think is relevant).
- Name and describe a person who you consider to be a role model. What about this person inspires you?
- What are your goals for the future? What do you hope to do in middle school? High school? When you grow up?
At the end of the activity, all pieces are put together to form a whole STAR. Each STAR’s picture and own information can go on the center of the STAR.
PART II: STAR gallery walk
Stars will be displayed around the room and STARs will be given an opportunity to explore the STARs on display. Each STAR will be asked to come up with a question for every other STAR based on the information they’ve already noted. STARs should write these questions in their journals, labeled with the name of the person that that question is for. Then, STARs will have the chance to get their questions answered with a period of mingling and asking to get to know one another better.
