Stage 1:Display serval open baby-foods jars filled to the rim with uncooked rice. Ask students to try find a way to life the jar using only one sharpened pencil and without spilling any of the rice. After the students have had a chance to experiment, you can demonstrate the solution. (insert pencil about halfway into the jar with the pointed end down. Pressdown on rice with fingers. Insert the pencil a little further down, and then press on the rice again. Life the jar by holding only the pencil.) Friction between the grains of rice and the pencil makes this work! Students have begun to think like scientisit in attepting to solve the problem.
