Stage 2:
A. Read "A House of My Own" and "Mango Says Goodbye" (p. 108-110) B. As usual, encourage students to use active reading techniques (notes, underlining, questioning), and have students identify what they notice about the passage. C. Define personification (giving human qualities to inhuman things), and ask students to identify examples of personification. |

Stage 3: Have students practice using personification by writing some examples that would describe their own neighborhoods.

Homework: (attach/link digital resources): 1. Write a descriptive narrative describing your neighborhood. Use the ideas you've come up with in your 5 senses brainstorm, as well as the examples of personification, to enhance description. 2. Read "Langston Terrace" (PHL 434-437). Answer: What does Langston Terrace reprsent for Greenfield's family? Give details from the text to support your answer.
