A4 Grade 6: Cardboard Chairs

Average: 2.7 (3 votes)
In this challenge, using recycled corrugated cardboard and carpenters wood glue, students will construct an upright that chair that must support the weight of your philosophy/advisory professor. The chair must fully support a normal use of the chair. (Students need not design it to handle tipping back or excessive leaning)

Final designs will be judged along the following criteria:

1) Aesthetics: How does it look? Is the design attractive and appealing? Would people be more likely to buy this chair based on its appearance?

2) Comfort: Is the chair comfortable to sit in?

3) Strength: Can the chair support a full range of adult weights?

4) Craftsmanship: Does the construction of the chair show careful attention to detail? Are all measurements shown on the Sketchup designs accurate to the nearest centimeter?

The design process will be judged by the following:

1) Background research: Printouts and commentary on chair designs throughout history. (include this in your design portfolio)

2) Design portfolio containing daily progress sheets and Sketchups of at least two alternative design proposals. Use of Sketchup must be done using the correct units of measurement. The lengths and widths of all chair parts must be labeled using Sketchup.

3) Chairity Slideshow: Each team will be raising money for a non-profit organization of their choice. At the end of this project, you will be “selling” your chair to the public as part of an online auction called the CSS Chairity Drive. Your presentation should include at least 15 slides and ALL team members must have a part in creating the presentation. Part of the presentation should be about the design process, and part should introduce the charity you are raising money for.

4) End-of-project teamwork assessment. Each team-member will be rated by his/her other two teammates.
