[6:19:07] gelingsky says: That's great
[6:19:21] gelingsky says: Do you have a microphone
[6:26:46] gelingsky says: cross cultural understanding
[6:32:28] gelingsky says: Video as a means to analyze facial expressions
[6:34:00] masatoshiw80 says: That's right.

[6:42:07] gelingsky says: Consider the details through mapping
[6:47:11] gelingsky says: I think we have to narrow our concept of culture
[6:49:09] gelingsky says: Culture in relaxed environment
[6:49:33] gelingsky says: This would help students speak more.
[6:50:51] gelingsky says: Japanese speakers and native English speaking people
[6:54:38] gelingsky says: With Skype, it is easier to view someone's facial expressions and mouth movements. Thus, students can easily imitate the speaker without feeling nervous.
[6:55:03] gelingsky says: or worried about the speaker's reaction to their observation
[6:55:48] gelingsky says: Culture through facial expressions
[6:56:51] gelingsky says: Role of the teacher
[6:56:55] gelingsky says: Role of the students
[6:57:21] gelingsky says: Teacher as a facilitator
[6:59:42] gelingsky says: Remember when we gave the presentation yesterday. The teacher said it would be best to add a function on Skype which we could place a link to a reading for the native speaker and Japanese speaker to discuss
[7:00:59] gelingsky says: Skype must be adjusted
[7:01:11] gelingsky says: it isn't 100% perfect for our idea
[7:01:58] gelingsky says: Teacher and student will have to discuss a reading or picture or some file
[7:05:53] gelingsky says: culture through facial expressions and discussion
[7:06:37] gelingsky says: Feedback
[7:07:51] gelingsky says: Follow up messages after the lesson
[7:09:02] gelingsky says: Students have the most power
[7:10:39] masatoshiw80 says: again can't hear you
[7:10:51] masatoshiw80 says: why
[7:10:54] gelingsky says: We are preparing students to go abroad and interact with foreigners
[7:12:36] gelingsky says: Students can't interact with foreigners so they can't speak English very well or understand the culture
[7:12:54] gelingsky says: Culture is more im
[7:13:18] gelingsky says: Culture is more important-means to maintain the relationship
[7:14:28] gelingsky says: Teachers don't need to bring resources
[7:15:58] gelingsky says: Your idea as a concept will be good
[7:16:20] gelingsky says: Concept---> Cultural through facial expressions and culture
[7:16:52] gelingsky says: Skill--> Improving one's English (my idea)

[7:27:52] gelingsky says: What is your screen name?
[7:28:05] masatoshiw80 says: MasatoshiW
[7:29:50] masatoshiw80 says: I think you have a dashboard and I join it.

[5:56:06] gelingsky says: お早うございます
[5:56:51] masatoshiw80 says: Good morning,sir!
[5:57:54] masatoshiw80 says: Have you got my e-mail with my attachment?
[5:58:01] gelingsky says: How are you?
[5:58:18] masatoshiw80 says: a little tired
[5:58:43] gelingsky says: same
[5:58:52] gelingsky says: Actually, I haven't received your email yet.
[6:00:25] masatoshiw80 says: today it's a last day of the extra-class for advanced students in my school. so I'd like to finish today's task by 7:00.
[6:00:31] masatoshiw80 says: Oh, really?
[6:00:57] masatoshiw80 says: let me check. Last night I sent you.
[6:02:05] gelingsky says: I see. Alright, so let's begin. I also sent you some files which will help us think more about the curriculum framework. Did you receive them?
[6:04:01] masatoshiw80 says: You mean two address of web site?
[6:05:56] masatoshiw80 says: I can hear you, but you don't hear me.
[6:06:09] masatoshiw80 says: Just  a moment
[6:09:22] masatoshiw80 says: Please tell you e-mail adress again.

[6:19:17] gelingsky says: SKYPE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK

Rationale:
Advantages of using Skype to teach English.
-We believe that learning another’s culture must take precedence over learning a language. Through learning culture, it becomes easier to engage native speakers with confidence.
-Students can observe as well as analyze a native speaker’s facial expressions without fear
-We also believe that learners learn best in a comfortable environment.
-students can access Skype easily

Goals:
Our goal is to help students reach out to foreigners in a natural setting and improve their understanding and speaking abilities.

Subject Matter Overview:

Sequence Outline:

Assessment:

Appendix:
[6:21:26] gelingsky says: You said corroborated work between two students?
[6:28:48] gelingsky says: Look at the Curriculum framework above
[6:29:57] gelingsky says: Goals: Our goal is to help students communicate with cultural competence
[6:30:33] gelingsky says: a distinct cultural awareness
[6:31:21] gelingsky says: Subject Matter Overview
[6:32:31] gelingsky says: Week one  "do you like....."
[6:32:39] gelingsky says: Week two "Can you.......?"
[6:32:48] masatoshiw80 says: I agree.
[6:33:18] masatoshiw80 says: Teachers offer some gramatical point before the class?
[6:33:24] gelingsky says: Yes
[6:34:36] gelingsky says: THree  levels (Daily Conversation, Business English, Office English)
[6:34:47] masatoshiw80 says: I change microphone.
[6:36:02] gelingsky says: For our curriculum framework, I think we should design ten lessons for each focus
[6:37:47] masatoshiw80 says: again can' hear you
[6:38:34] gelingsky says: Daily Conversation      Week one   Greetings                    Business English          Week one   Meeting                       Office English             Week one   Talking with colleagues
[6:41:45] masatoshiw80 says: one lesson a week. in total  a year
[6:41:46] gelingsky says: Assessment
[6:41:58] gelingsky says: 50-52
[6:42:46] gelingsky says: http://www.flickr.com/photos/verycoolwinter/481258870/
[6:44:51] gelingsky says: What do you think about using forums for assessment?
[6:45:20] masatoshiw80 says: I can't almost hear you, worse than yesterday.
[6:45:35] gelingsky says: But I haven't been talking
[6:46:00] gelingsky says: It's okay
[6:46:37] gelingsky says: So I will finish writing the curriculum framework.
[6:46:54] masatoshiw80 says: forum for assessment? In this case , who assess student?
[6:47:22] gelingsky says: The teacher can also use the forum to access the student
[6:47:47] gelingsky says: For example: Great lesson today. You are really improving; however, please try to use more natural English
[6:48:32] masatoshiw80 says: Is this given by teacher, right?
[6:48:36] gelingsky says: yes
[6:49:26] gelingsky says: A student might respond this way. "Thank you for the lesson." "The topic was easy to understand, but you spoke a little too fast for me"
[6:50:13] masatoshiw80 says: forum means someone besides T & S can join this?
[6:50:23] gelingsky says: Forums are moderated
[6:50:29] gelingsky says: It depends on who owns the forum
[6:50:33] masatoshiw80 says: to me very new
[6:50:42] gelingsky says: If the teacher owns the forum, he or she can decide who can join
[6:51:00] gelingsky says: I think our curriculum should utilize NLP
[6:51:04] masatoshiw80 says: fine
[6:51:19] gelingsky says: Neural linguistic program
[6:51:32] gelingsky says: Teachers should not blame the student
[6:51:45] masatoshiw80 says: I see.
[6:51:49] gelingsky says: and try to give positive and constructive feedback
[6:52:22] masatoshiw80 says: That's right, especaially in the case of speaking.
[6:54:06] gelingsky says: So I will review your mind map and give you some feedback
[6:54:15] gelingsky says: I will send you the curriculum framework today
[6:54:26] gelingsky says: Please check it and give me feed back
[6:55:00] masatoshiw80 says: Sounds good.
[6:59:08] gelingsky says: I will return you the revised mind map. Please return the revised curriculum framework
[6:59:34] masatoshiw80 says: o.k.
[7:01:38] gelingsky says: Thank you very much for today.
[7:02:10] masatoshiw80 says: Thank you very much.
[7:02:38] gelingsky says: Take care

[6:20:57] masatoshiw80 says: Voice over Internet Plotcol
[6:21:09] gelingsky says: Voice over Internet Protocol, also called VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network.

Companies providing VoIP service are commonly referred to as providers, and protocols which are used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. They may be viewed as commercial realizations of the experimental Network Voice Protocol (1973) invented for the ARPANET providers. Some cost savings are due to utilizing a single network - see attached image - to carry voice and data, especially where users have existing underutilized network capacity that can carry VoIP at no additional cost. VoIP to VoIP phone calls are sometimes free, while VoIP to public switched telephone networks, PSTN, may have a cost that's borne by the VoIP user.

There are two types of PSTN to VoIP services: -Direct Inward Dialing (DID) and access numbers. DID will connect the caller directly to the VoIP user while access numbers require the caller to input the extension number of the VoIP user.
[6:46:33] gelingsky says: I think your idea will come from your personal experiences as a learner as well as a teacher.
[6:47:19] gelingsky says: Are you there?
[6:49:52] gelingsky says: Dear Dr. Oyler,

Hello! How are you today?

Masatoshi and I have found a plethora of resources for the Skype curriculum. We wanted to know more about the small presentation on Saturday. Should we focus on presenting our resources or the details of our curriculum to the class? Thank you very much and have a good day.

Sincerely,

William Clifton Green II
[6:51:00] masatoshiw80 says: I got it.
[6:51:10] gelingsky says: Is this okay?
[6:51:51] masatoshiw80 says: Yes, but do we need to make small presentation?
[6:53:35] gelingsky says: Thank you very much for the resources
[6:53:52] gelingsky says: Have a good day
