Skype Curriculum Lesson Plan 

Grade Level: Beginner / Intermediate 

Subject: Society / Health / Environment 

Description: In this lesson, students think about the environmental problem of ozone depletion and understand the serious situation in Australia.  They write their opinions about the problem and get ready to exchange them in the next lesson. 

Goals: 1.      To have students think of the environmental problem of ozone depletion.2.      To make students have their own opinions and think of solution of the problem. 

Objectives:1.        Students will be able to understand the serious situation of the ozone depletion in Australia.2.        Students will be able to have their opinions about the problem and try to find what they can do to solve it.3.        Students will be able to read and understand the newspaper articles written in English and write their opinions in simple English. 

Materials:・    on-line newspaper articles about the dangers of the sun in Australiahttp://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,22159230-5006007,00.html?from=public_rss・    Japanese web site about the ozone depletion to help students understandhttp://www.ecology.or.jp/9706/earth.htmlhttp://contest.thinkquest.jp/tqj2001/40419/yes/ozon/index.html・    computers 

Procedure:Students look at the picture of the kindergarten kids wearing sunglasses when they are playing with friends on the playground.  They are asked the first impression about the picture and write it into the form.  Then they read newspaper article which goes with the picture.  To understand the content thoroughly, they can refer the Japanese web site which gives the simple explanation about the ozone depletion.  After reading the material, students answer some questions about the article and make sure if they understand it right. ・What do students wear as part of their compulsory uniform? ・Why do students wear them?・When do students wear them?・How much do they cost?Then they write their own opinions about the problem.

 Assessment:  Read students’ first impression about the picture.  Check questions about the article.  Read the opinions and make sure if they are ready for the discussion in the next lesson.  Students can read some comments on the “Forum”.
