Stage 1: Students will be given copies of the Checklist for Writing (Categories that will reappear in CSS writing rubric) - and will be given an explanation of the purpose/function of this writing assessment. Basically, this essay allows us to see where students stand in terms of writing and allows us to identify what topics need addressing in terms of writing. Students' work will be assessed according to the items listed in the checklist (Stimulating Ideas, Logical Organization, Engaging Voice, Original Word Choice, Smooth-Reading Sentences, Correct, accurate copy).

Stage 2: Students will be given writing assessments (including question), and will have 40 minutes to respond to the writing prompt: Is it ever fair to be left out? As you answer this question, describe a time when you have been left out from something (it can be anything - not being chosen for a team, being excluded by a classmate, etc.). Was this situation fair? Please answer in a well-organized essay and be sure to include a main idea/thesis statement. | |
