Attached is a draft "domain model" for engineering education was produced largely by the hand of CSS instructor John Eggebrecht. Specified learning objectives for this course are still being added to the document.

Attached is also a "shared learning cycle"which represents an integrated approach to STEM through three different cycles of inquiry (modeling, designing, reverse-engineering) that the CSS engineering program attempts. It also includes an attempt at shared language and representational tools for energy and systems analysis.

A4 Grade 6: Cardboard Chairs

In this challenge, using recycled corrugated cardboard and carpenters wood glue, students will construct an upright that chair that must support the weight of your philosophy/advisory professor. The chair must fully support a normal use of the chair. (Students need not design it to handle tipping back or excessive leaning)

Summary:

For future classes, it may be a good idea to use this unit as an opportunity to teach good presentation skills. I think a good way to teach presentation skills is to have the students evaluate a presentation you give with intentionally poorly designed slides. The delivery could also be intentionally bad (facing the board while reading, etc...). Of course we should also do good things, like speaking loudly and clearly. One way to accomplish this is to give the students an evaluation sheet that lets them quickly rank if they liked each slide on a scale from 1 to 5 and one thing that stood out about the slide.

This is a place to list any ideas for projects throughout the year. The goal is to use Energy as a common thread throughout all of the design projects, but it is ok to be flexible with that.

I have been trying to come up with things that can be used as a competition. I think it helps to provide a realistic aspect of real engineering - the cheapest/most efficient/most functional design wins out.
